So what do gutter services in Perth involve, exactly?
Last updated
Gutters and downpipes have one job: to catch the rain that runs off your roof and carry it to the stormwater drain or soakwell, instead of letting it pour down the walls, pool against the footings or back up under the tiles. On most Perth homes that means a run of Colorbond or zincalume steel gutter along every roof edge, a downpipe every few metres and a connection to stormwater below ground. When any part of that chain blocks, leaks or gives way, the roof and the house under it are what suffer, which is why a failed gutter is worth fixing before the damage spreads.
Perth is hard on gutters. The sea breeze carries fine sand off the coastal plain onto roofs from Fremantle to Joondalup, and the salt in the air finds every scratch and cut edge in the steel. Gum, marri and peppermint trees drop leaves and bark all year, heaviest in the hills along the Darling Scarp. Then the winter fronts arrive from June to August and whatever built up over a dry summer is tested by days of rain in a row. Gutter services in Perth are the work of keeping that chain clear, sound and sized for the weather: cleaning, repair, replacement, installation, gutter guards and roof plumbing.
At the Bureau of Meteorology's Perth Metro station, average rainfall is about 718 mm a year, and June, July and August bring 399 mm of it, more than half, while December to February brings about 38 mm in total (station records 1993 to 2026). Gutter cleaning before winter
Cleaning is the routine part. Our team clears every gutter run by hand or vacuum, clears the outlets and downpipe heads of nests and moss, flushes each downpipe until it runs clear at the bottom, then bags the debris and hoses off the paving. For most Perth homes once a year in late autumn, before the first front, is the minimum; homes under gum, jacaranda or plane trees usually need a second clean after the spring drop, and coastal suburbs collect sand as well as leaves.
A clean is also the closest look your gutters get all year, so we note any rust, sag or loose joint we find and tell you about it. Our gutter cleaning page covers what is included, what is quoted separately and how the cost is worked out.
Gutter repair for leaks, rust and sag
Repair covers the faults a clean cannot fix: a joint that has let go, a rust hole along the bottom of a run, a bracket that has pulled out of the fascia so the run sags and holds water, or a downpipe cracked by the sun or knocked off its outlet. Most repairs are a few hours of work: cutting out the bad section, joining a new length matched to the existing profile and colour, re-fixing brackets and resealing joints so the run drains to the downpipe again.
The line between repair and replacement is how far the rust has spread. One bad section on an otherwise sound run is a repair. Rust in several runs, or a gutter that has been patched more than once, usually is not. Our gutter repair page explains how we make that call and what a repair visit includes.
Gutter replacement and gutter installation
When rust and sag have spread past the point of patching, replacement takes the old guttering off and fits new Colorbond or zincalume runs on new brackets, with new downpipes where the old ones are damaged. Installation is the same work on a roof that has never had gutters or is getting new ones: an extension, a patio, a shed or a new build. Either way the gutter is sized to the roof area and the rain it has to carry, set with a fall towards the downpipes, and connected to stormwater rather than left to pour beside the footings.
Tile roofs and tin roofs need different fixing and flashing details at the edge, and rotten fascia found once the old gutter comes off is quoted as its own line rather than hidden in the price. The gutter replacement and gutter installation pages set out what each job includes, the profiles and colours available, and how long it usually takes.
Gutter guards and roof plumbing
Two services round out the set. Gutter guards are mesh fitted over your existing gutters so leaves, sticks and nests stay out and the downpipes stay clear. They cut how often you need a clean without removing the need for a check, because fine Perth sand still settles on top of the mesh. Our gutter guards page covers the types of guard, which roofs suit them and what a fitting involves.
Roof plumbing is the work above the gutter line: roof leaks traced to the source and sealed at the flashing, valley or box gutter, plus downpipes and stormwater connections. If water is coming into the house and the gutter itself is sound, it is usually a roof plumbing job, and our roof plumbing page explains how a leak is traced and what our qualified, insured roof plumbers take on.
FAQs
Gutter questions
The questions people ask before they book. Still unsure? Call us and ask; the quote is free.
How long do gutter repairs and replacements take?
It depends on the size of the home. On an average single-storey Perth house, a repair or a full gutter replacement usually takes our team about a day. A two-storey home, a large or awkward roof, or a surprise once the old gutter comes off (rotten fascia, usually) can stretch that to two or three days. If timing matters, tell us when you ask for the quote.
Which gutter materials are the best option for me?
Most Perth homes use Colorbond or zincalume steel guttering. Colorbond is pre-painted in a wide colour range; zincalume is the unpainted finish, chosen where cost matters more than colour. Aluminium and copper last for decades but cost a lot more, and vinyl or PVC is the budget option. We recommend a profile and material to suit your roof and fascia when we quote.
Can you replace specific sections of guttering?
Yes. If only one run has rusted through, sagged or come away from the fascia, we cut out that section and join a new length to the sound guttering either side, matched to the existing material, profile and colour. On an older roof where several runs are failing, a full replacement is usually better value than patching one section at a time, and we tell you which before we quote.
Do you take away cut-offs and debris?
Yes. Any mess we make or debris that falls from the roof during a clean, repair, installation or replacement is packed up and taken away by our team: the old guttering, cut-offs and packaging, and the leaves and sludge from a clean. You are left with a tidy yard and nothing sharp lying around. If you want it written into the quote, ask and we will add it.
Do you offer roof plumbing services?
Yes. Alongside gutter cleaning, repairs, replacement and installation across Perth, our qualified, insured roof plumbers seal roof leaks and advise on roofing problems that may be causing them: flashings, valleys, box gutters, downpipes and stormwater connections. If water is getting in above the gutter line, or a leak keeps coming back after the gutter has been resealed, ask for a roof plumber when you request your quote.
Are you the tradespeople, or a booking service?
Aus Gutters is the booking service: one Perth number and one free quote for any of the six services. The quote, the work and the guarantee come from a licensed and insured Perth gutter or roof plumbing business in our network, and the business that does your job stands behind it. Our footer disclosure sets the arrangement out in full, and the About page explains it.
